The Department of Employment and Labour invites suitably qualified candidates to apply for the position of Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Inspector within the Mechanical Engineering discipline. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute towards creating safer and healthier working environments in line with the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
Minimum Requirements:
- Senior Certificate (Matric)
- A 3-year recognised qualification (NQF Level 6) in Mechanical Engineering
- A valid driver’s license
Knowledge and Skills: Applicants must have in-depth knowledge of:
- Occupational Health and Safety Act (Act 85 of 1993) and its regulations
- Departmental policies and procedures
- South African National Standards (Codes)
- Compensation for Occupational Injuries and Diseases Act
- Unemployment Insurance Act
Core skills required include:
- Communication (verbal and written)
- Planning and organisation
- Computer literacy
- Conflict resolution and negotiation
- Problem-solving and innovation
- Facilitation, presentation, and interviewing skills
- Analytical thinking and interpersonal abilities
Key Responsibilities:
- Independently conduct workplace inspections to enforce compliance with OHS regulations
- Monitor employer registration and compliance with COIDA and UIA
- Investigate and finalise incidents and complaints under the OHS Act
- Enforce safety standards and appear in court as a State witness when necessary
- Carry out proactive inspections and compile detailed reports
- Conduct advocacy and awareness campaigns on labour legislation
- Contribute to the development and maintenance of regional inspection plans
- Perform statistical analysis and prepare consolidated inspection reports
