Key Role
The Graduate Mechanical Engineer will work closely with senior engineers to assist in the design, specification, and delivery of mechanical engineering projects, with a primary focus on refrigeration systems. The role will involve exposure to all stages of project delivery, from inception to close-out, while ensuring adherence to high quality, safety, and environmental standards.

Responsibilities
The successful candidate will be expected to support project teams in compiling Bills of Quantities (BOQs), preparing tender documentation, and assisting with equipment specification and approvals. Responsibilities will also include aiding in quality control (QA/QC), site supervision, and troubleshooting existing installations. Candidates will contribute to cost control processes related to mechanical installations and participate in scope definition and monitoring. An awareness of industry standards such as SANS and ASHRAE is beneficial, as is knowledge of thermodynamics, heat transfer, and refrigeration cycles. Proficiency in Autodesk products such as AutoCAD, Revit, and BIM360, as well as programming skills in VBA or Dynamo, will be advantageous.

The Graduate Mechanical Engineer will be expected to uphold and promote WSP’s SHEQ vision by modelling exemplary safety behaviour, contributing to the identification and management of health, safety, environmental, and quality risks, and ensuring that all work environments remain safe and compliant with regulatory requirements.

Qualifications and Experience
Applicants must hold a BEng, BSc, or BTech in Mechanical Engineering, with a minimum overall GPA of 70% as of June 2025. While no prior work experience is required, exposure to consulting engineering will be an advantage. A keen interest in becoming a Built Environment Professional (BEP) is essential. Possession of a Code B driver’s licence and access to a personal vehicle is preferred.

Competencies and Skills
Ideal candidates will demonstrate strong attention to detail, excellent time management skills, adaptability, and a willingness to learn new technologies. They must be self-motivated, able to work effectively in a team, and possess strong communication and problem-solving abilities. Skills in thermodynamic and pipe network design principles are beneficial, and familiarity with BIM methodologies is highly regarded.
