The South African Radio Astronomy Observatory (SARAO) is proud to announce an exceptional opportunity for bright and enthusiastic Engineering and Science Honours graduates to join our prestigious Graduate-in-Training Programme for 2026.
As a graduate trainee at SARAO, you will be immersed in the cutting-edge world of radio astronomy, working at world-class facilities including our Klerefontein site in the Northern Cape and the Hartebeesthoek site Observatory. This three-year programme is designed to develop your technical expertise while contributing to groundbreaking astronomical research that places South Africa at the forefront of global scientific discovery.
What We Offer
SARAO will provide comprehensive financial assistance to successful candidates who register for a fourth year of study (full-time) at a South African university while in the Graduate-in-Training Programme. This investment in your education demonstrates our commitment to developing the next generation of skilled professionals in the radio astronomy sector.
Upon successful completion of the graduate training programme, participants will be placed in permanent positions at SARAO’s Cape Town (Western Cape) and Karoo Support Base facilities, offering long-term career prospects in an exciting and growing field.
Who Should Apply
We are seeking South African citizens who have completed or are in the final year of studies in the following disciplines:
Engineering Disciplines:
- BEng/BScEng (Electronics, Electrical, Mechanical/Mechatronics, Civil)
- BEng/BScEng (Computer Science), BSc(Hons) Computer Science
- B.Eng or B.Tech (Civil Engineering)
Science Disciplines:
- MSc (Electronics, Radio Frequency, Antennas)
Selection Process
Shortlisted candidates will be required to complete a mandatory online assessment as part of our rigorous selection process.
