About the Programme

The City of Cape Town is offering an exceptional opportunity for unemployed South African graduates to launch their engineering careers through the National Treasury funded Infrastructure Skills Development Grant (ISDG) Training Programme. This comprehensive three-year programme is designed to develop the next generation of engineering professionals who will contribute to building and maintaining the city’s critical infrastructure.

Who Should Apply?

We are seeking passionate and ambitious engineering graduates who meet the following criteria:

Essential Requirements:

• South African citizens under the age of 35 years
• Currently unemployed
• Hold a Diploma, Advanced Diploma, BTech, BEng, BSc, MTech, MEng, MSc, or PhD qualification in Chemical, Civil, Electrical, or Mechanical Engineering
• Eligible to register with the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) as a professional Engineer, Technologist, or Technician
• Code B driver’s licence (advantageous)

What You’ll Do

As an ISDG Graduate Trainee, you will embark on a structured professional development journey that includes:

Training and Development:

• Develop a personalized training plan aligned with ECSA professional registration requirements in collaboration with your assigned mentor
• Complete a comprehensive structured programme designed to build the competencies required for professional registration
• Participate in both research initiatives and capital/operational projects relevant to your engineering discipline

Practical Experience:

• Gain hands-on experience working on real-world engineering projects that impact the lives of Cape Town residents
• Collaborate with experienced engineering professionals across multiple disciplines
• Engage with various engineering departments to broaden your technical knowledge and understanding

Professional Growth:

• Work toward achieving professional registration with ECSA as a Professional Engineer, Technologist, or Technician within the three-year programme period
• Participate in all ISDG-related activities and networking opportunities
• Develop professional report-writing and documentation skills

Reporting and Accountability:

• Submit monthly and quarterly training progress reports
• Conduct all work activities professionally and in the best interests of the City of Cape Town
• Perform various routine activities as outlined in your individual training plan
