The Opportunity

We are seeking motivated and enthusiastic candidates to join our Civil Engineering Learnership Program in Nelspruit. This is an exceptional opportunity for young South Africans to gain hands-on experience in civil engineering through the YES (Youth Employment Service) Program, while working alongside industry professionals in a world-class organization.

As a Civil Engineering Learner, you will be immersed in both fieldwork and laboratory environments, developing practical skills in materials testing, quality control, and civil engineering procedures. This role offers comprehensive training that will equip you with valuable industry experience and technical competencies to launch your career in civil engineering.

Key Responsibilities

Your role will encompass a diverse range of activities across field and laboratory settings:

Field Operations:

  • Conduct density tests and layer/stockpile sampling at construction sites
  • Manufacture and handle concrete cubes for testing purposes
  • Perform Dynamic Cone Penetrometer (DCP) tests
  • Execute Ring and Ball tests on road surfaces
  • Conduct sand patch tests and on-site viscosity assessments
  • Sample asphalt, seals, concrete, and aggregate materials

Laboratory Work:

  • Assist with sample preparation and testing procedures
  • Perform accurate calculations related to all conducted tests
  • Support quality control activities under supervision
  • Maintain laboratory discipline and safety standards

General Duties:

  • Ensure work sites and workshop areas are clean and free of consumables after task completion
  • Adhere strictly to SGS quality and safety management systems
  • Report any deviations, irregularities, or non-conformances promptly
  • Complete additional reasonable tasks as assigned by supervisors
  • Handle, move, and manage samples as required

Required Qualifications & Skills

Essential Requirements:

  • NQF Level 4 qualification or Diploma in Civil Engineering
  • South African citizenship with valid ID document
  • Age between 18-30 years
  • Currently unemployed
  • Clear criminal record
  • Willingness to relocate to Nelspruit
  • Physical fitness to handle materials and samples

Technical Skills:

  • Computer literacy, particularly Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy
  • Excellent organizational abilities
  • Data analysis aptitude
  • Strong research capabilities

Personal Attributes:

  • Self-motivated with high initiative
  • Ability to work efficiently under pressure
  • Team player with good communication skills in English
  • Commitment to safety and quality standards

Advantageous:

  • Previous sampling and preparation experience
  • Fieldwork experience
