This structured programme is designed to provide graduates with meaningful experiential learning across all aspects of mining engineering and metallurgy — from blasting and production to environmental compliance and SAP administration.

This is more than a theoretical exercise. You will be embedded in live operations, contributing to real projects, solving real problems, and building the professional foundation that will define your engineering career.

About the Opportunity

Imerys Refractory Minerals is a globally respected producer of refractory mineral solutions, and their South African operations at Annesley Mine represent a world-class working environment for emerging engineers. As a Mining Engineering Intern, you will rotate through key focus areas that span the full mining value chain — giving you the kind of broad operational exposure that most graduates can only dream of in their first role.

The internship is structured to align with South Africa’s engineering experiential training requirements, and interns will earn regulated benefits at the company’s discretion throughout the programme.

What You Will Be Doing

Your responsibilities will be wide-ranging and practically focused. You will provide technical support in the development, implementation, and monitoring of integrated management systems and standard operating procedures. You will assist your line manager on both major and minor projects, compile monthly and quarterly reports, and ensure full adherence to all health and safety practices and procedures.

Operationally, your focus areas will include blasting, mining, production, environmental investigation, and continuous innovation projects. You will be responsible for capturing critical data on SAP — including mining tonnages, overburden, diesel consumption, mass balances, and dispatches. You will also assist in managing the mining and screening process, support production scheduling aligned to market demand, and contribute to daily dispatch control.

Beyond production, you will play an active role in the company’s environmental management efforts — conducting compliance inspections and audits, investigating environmental incidents, coordinating monitoring programmes, and developing awareness and training initiatives for the workforce. Rehabilitation planning and continuous improvement activities will also form part of your portfolio.
