Are you a technically skilled professional with hands-on experience in electrical and mechanical systems? Eskom, South Africa’s leading electricity utility, is looking for a motivated Technician: Electrical & Mechanical Systems (Test Facilities) to join its Grid Modernisation division within the Asset Management Business Unit. This is a permanent opportunity based in Gauteng, graded at Task Grade T11, and offers market-related remuneration.
About the Role
In this role, you will be responsible for monitoring plant system performance and taking corrective action to ensure that plant operations remain aligned with design specifications. You will work within Eskom’s test facilities environment, contributing to the reliability and efficiency of critical infrastructure that supports South Africa’s power grid.
Your day-to-day responsibilities will span a broad range of technical and administrative functions, requiring both practical expertise and sound judgement in a highly regulated environment.
Key Responsibilities
As a Technician in this role, you will be expected to:
- Maintain the operational performance of plant systems, identifying and addressing deviations before they impact output or safety
- Assess and determine the long-term performance trends of plant infrastructure
- Perform specialised tests on systems in accordance with applicable standards and procedures
- Apply updated calibration figures and standards in response to environmental and operational changes
- Ensure full compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Act and relevant environmental legislation
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date information systems related to plant performance and activities
- Coordinate and oversee the activities of contractor staff on-site
- Assist with budget control and cost management within your area of responsibility
Required Knowledge and Technical Expertise
The successful candidate must demonstrate a strong working knowledge of:
- The OHS Act (Act 85/93) and its requirements
- IEEE Std 81 — Guide for measuring earth resistivity, ground impedance, and earth surface potentials
- Earthing and lightning protection systems
- IEEE Std 1441 — Guide for the inspection of overhead transmission line construction
- Power plant systems and technology
- Relevant design codes, standards, and engineering theory
- Air conditioning legislation and regulations
- Applicable Eskom processes, procedures, policies, and guidelines
Skills Profile
Beyond technical knowledge, the ideal candidate will bring strong interpersonal and communication skills, computer literacy, and a customer-focused mindset. A valid Code 8 driving licence is required. Behavioural attributes such as integrity, honesty, trustworthiness, and professionalism are essential, as is a team-oriented approach and a firm commitment to safety.
Minimum Qualifications and Experience
- A National Diploma or National N Diploma (Technical) at NQF Level 6 with 240 credits
- P1 and P2 related practical experience in air conditioning, electrical systems, and other building installations
