The Department of Employment and Labour is inviting applications from suitably qualified and experienced individuals to fill the position of Inspector: Occupational Health and Safety (Electrical Engineering), based at the Modimolle Centre. This is an exciting opportunity for a driven professional to contribute meaningfully to workplace safety and labour law compliance across the region.

About the Role

As an OHS Inspector specialising in Electrical Engineering, you will plan and independently conduct inspections to ensure compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, Act 85 of 1993, its Regulations, and incorporated Standards. You will also confirm employer registration with the Unemployment Insurance Act and the Compensation for Occupational Injuries and Diseases Act.

The role requires you to independently plan, investigate, and finalise incidents and complaints related to OHS legislation, and to appear in Court as a State witness when necessary. You will conduct proactive inspections as per schedule, compile and consolidate reports, and plan and deliver advocacy campaigns on labour legislation — analysing their impact and producing comprehensive reports. At a senior level, you will contribute to the planning, drafting, and maintenance of regional inspection plans and the compilation of consolidated statistical reports on regional and allocated cases.

Minimum Requirements

To be considered for this position, applicants must hold a Senior Certificate plus a three-year recognised qualification in Electrical Engineering, along with a valid driver’s licence. Registration with a recognised professional body is advantageous but not compulsory.

Knowledge Required

Candidates must demonstrate sound knowledge of departmental policies and procedures, the Occupational Health and Safety Act and its Regulations, South African National Standards (Codes), the Compensation for Occupational Injuries and Diseases Act, and the Unemployment Insurance Act.

Skills Required

The ideal candidate will possess strong abilities in planning and organising, communication, computer literacy, facilitation, interpersonal engagement, conflict handling, negotiation, problem solving, interviewing, presentation, innovation, and analytical and written communication.

Priority will be given to Coloured and White candidates in line with the Department’s Employment Equity Plan.
