South African Breweries (SAB) is offering three exciting In-Service Training opportunities at its Newlands Brewery for students studying towards a National Diploma in Chemical Engineering, Food Science, or Mechanical Engineering. This is a chance to gain hands-on experiential training within one of South Africa’s most established and admired brewing companies, forming part of a beer economy that supports over 250,000 jobs nationwide.
SAB has built its reputation over more than a century as South Africa’s largest brewer, operating 7 breweries and 42 depots countrywide with a workforce of approximately 5,000 people. About the Role
The Brewing In-Service Trainee will be responsible for supporting the operation of core brewing processes, including the Brew House, Cellars, Filtration, and Bright Beer Tanks, along with associated process areas. This role offers practical exposure to quality control, problem-solving, and asset care within a live production environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate equipment across brewing process areas in line with standard operating procedures
- Monitor and review process performance against targets, recording and understanding causes of deviation
- Record product waste and movement on relevant documentation and information systems, reviewing trends to identify issues
- Conduct in-depth cleaning, lubrication, and inspection of equipment according to autonomous operations and maintenance schedules
- Identify defective plant and report through to the CRO for resolution
- Carry out required quality checks and analyses as outlined in work instructions and SOPs
- Actively participate in shift meetings, raise questions, contribute improvement suggestions, and use the action log to track issues
- Understand and engage in team goal review sessions
- Use relevant communication platforms to stay informed and keep others updated
- Complete thorough handovers to incoming shift teams on plant performance, quality, and maintenance matters
- Apply root-cause problem-solving techniques (5 Whys) and quick-fix routines, escalating to the CRO where needed
Minimum Requirements
- Currently studying towards a National Diploma in Chemical Engineering, Food Science, or Mechanical Engineering (3rd year)
- Understanding of the brewing process and the chemical processes involved in beer production
- Available to complete experiential training or plant exposure as part of academic requirements
- Ability to monitor process performance
- Strong teamwork skills
- PC literacy
