Dis-Chem Pharmacies is building a Dispensary Support Talent Pool for stores across KwaZulu-Natal, and this is a great entry point into a pharmacy career. The role is aimed at learners who want to complete the basic pharmacist assistant course, and it’s structured as a Fixed Term contract that leads to permanent employment once you’re registered with the South African Pharmacy Council (SAPC).

As a Dispensary Support team member, you’ll work under the direct supervision of a pharmacist, learning the full range of dispensary functions. Duties include selling Schedule 1 medicines, assisting with compounding and preparation of non-sterile medicines according to approved formulas and SOPs, unpacking and merchandising stock, and keeping the dispensary and OTC shelves clean and organised.

You’ll also be trained to interpret prescriptions accurately, pick, pack, label and check medication, and understand common dosages and drug interactions. Every medication you handle will be checked and signed off by a pharmacist before it reaches a patient, so you’ll be learning in a properly supervised environment. Other responsibilities include controlling stock across Schedule 1 to Schedule 5 medicines, tracking expiry dates, following up with patients on script tracking, assisting with call centre and patient service calls, and supporting scheme authorisations for chronic, HIV/AIDS and oncology medication. You’ll also report on low or out-of-stock levels to the dispensary manager and help receive stock according to company procedure.

Minimum Requirements

Grade 12 (Matric) or Senior Certificate with Pure Mathematics at 50%, plus Life Science and/or Physical Science, with an overall average of at least 50%. You’ll also need to complete a proficiency test that qualifies you to apply for registration with the SAPC as a learner basic assistant.

Advantageous

Experience in Retail FMCG, particularly at a Dis-Chem front shop, along with a good performance record, will count in your favour. Knowledge of drug and family planning, complementary medicine, and systems such as Unisolv, SAP and E-Scripting are also a plus.
