Joburg City Theatres (JCT) is offering a Building and Security Intern position at Soweto Theatre in Jabulani, Johannesburg. This internship gives unemployed South African youth practical, on-the-job exposure in facilities and building maintenance, supporting the Building and Facilities Department in a theatre and events environment.

About the Internship
This internship programme is an intervention by Joburg City Theatres to address the growing demand from tertiary institutions for students to gain on-the-job exposure, either as a pre-requisite to acquiring an academic qualification or as a requirement after completing one, to obtain experiential training. JCT is committed to giving students and graduates the opportunity to intern within the organisation and gain valuable workplace experience.
Minimum Requirements
- Matric / Grade 12 or equivalent
- Successfully completed N6 in Electrical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering and require practical workplace experience to obtain a National Diploma; or
- Hold a National Diploma, Advanced Diploma, or bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or mechanical engineering and require workplace experience to enhance employability
- Must be between 18 and 35 years old and a South African citizen
- Must be unemployed
- Must not have previously participated in an internship programme (except where a prior internship was not relevant to your course of study)
- Basic knowledge of plumbing and electrical systems
- Basic knowledge of building maintenance and repairs
- Computer literacy, including Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
Key Learning Areas
- Assist with general maintenance of theatre facilities and infrastructure
- Assist with routine inspections of buildings, plumbing, electrical, and structural systems
- Identify and report maintenance defects and safety hazards
- Assist with minor maintenance and repair works
- Monitor cleanliness, hygiene, and accessibility standards
- Support preventative maintenance programmes
- Assist with contractor supervision and site coordination
- Maintain maintenance logs, records, and stock control documentation
- Ensure compliance with Occupational Health and Safety requirements
- Support energy and water conservation initiatives
- Assist with asset management and record-keeping
- Support theatre operations during events and productions

- Ability to work independently and within a team
- Attention to detail and willingness to learn
Who Can Apply
This opportunity is open to youth in the Johannesburg community for a period not exceeding 24 months, who meet the above criteria and have not previously participated in a relevant internship programme.
