Are you a recently qualified engineering graduate looking to build a career at the intersection of engineering and technical sales? A well-established client in the engineering sector, based in Boksburg, is offering an 18-month Graduate Engineering Internship designed to fast-track a technically minded, commercially driven graduate into a career in technical sales and business development.

This opportunity is open to graduates from a range of engineering disciplines, including Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Mechatronic Engineering, Civil Engineering, and Metallurgical Engineering.

This is a field-based role, with approximately 80% of your time spent on the road engaging clients and generating new business, and the remaining 20% office-based, supporting engineering and project activities. It’s an excellent opportunity for a graduate who wants hands-on commercial exposure without stepping away from their engineering foundation.

Duties and Responsibilities

Technical Sales & Business Development (approximately 80%)

  • Conduct canvassing and cold calling to identify and develop new business opportunities
  • Generate and qualify prospective sales leads within the relevant market
  • Conduct regular client and prospective client site visits
  • Build and maintain strong professional relationships with new and existing clients
  • Conduct market research, analysis, and customer segmentation to identify potential opportunities
  • Understand client requirements and assist in identifying suitable technical solutions
  • Prepare quotations, proposals, and supporting sales documentation
  • Conduct outbound sales activities and participate in negotiations with prospective clients
  • Follow up on quotations, proposals, and potential business opportunities
  • Maintain awareness of market trends, customer requirements, and competitor activity

Engineering & Project Support (approximately 20%)

  • Assist with the development of technical and engineering solutions based on client requirements
  • Support application engineering activities, including technical calculations and solution selection
  • Assist senior engineers with technical drawings, design work, and engineering analysis
  • Participate in project planning, coordination, implementation, and progress tracking
  • Provide technical support and troubleshooting under supervision
  • Assist with project management activities from solution development through to implementation
  • Conduct technical research, data analysis, and reporting where required
  • Ensure work is conducted in accordance with relevant safety regulations and quality standards
  • Participate in mentorship, technical training, and continuous professional development

Requirements

  • Recently completed a Bachelor of Engineering (BEng Engineering) or Bachelor of Science in Engineering (BSc Eng) — Mechanical, Electrical, Industrial, Chemical, Mechatronic, Civil, or Metallurgical Engineering
  • Certificate, short course, or completed coursework in Project Planning / Project Management
  • MS Office proficiency
  • Valid driver’s license is essential
  • Basic knowledge of engineering design software (AutoCAD, SolidWorks, MATLAB, or similar) advantageous
  • Willingness to travel or work on-site if required
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and numerical ability
