Gijima, one of South Africa’s leading information and communications technology companies, is offering an exciting internship opportunity for a passionate and driven graduate to join its OH AI and Tech Development team as an AI Developer Intern. This is a hands-on role based in Midrand, Gauteng, and represents a rare chance to gain real-world experience at the intersection of software engineering, data management, and artificial intelligence.

The successful candidate will work alongside experienced professionals to build, manage, and scale intelligent applications, contributing meaningfully to projects that involve machine learning integration and the deployment of large language models. If you are a young, unemployed graduate with a genuine interest in the future of AI and software development, this internship could be the launchpad your career needs.

About Gijima

Gijima is a proudly South African ICT company with a long track record of delivering technology solutions across the public and private sectors. The company is committed to developing young talent and equipping graduates with the skills, exposure, and mentorship needed to thrive in a fast-evolving digital economy.

Role Overview

As an AI Developer Intern, you will be embedded within a dynamic development team and given responsibility across a range of technical functions. Your day-to-day work will include developing, testing, and maintaining application logic using Python and Java; designing, querying, and managing databases using SQL; and assisting in the integration of large language models and machine learning algorithms into functional software products. You will also support frontend development using HTML and work on data structuring and preprocessing pipelines that feed AI models.

This is not a passive, shadowing-only role. Gijima is looking for someone who is ready to get their hands dirty, solve real problems, and contribute to a team that is building intelligent technology at scale.

Minimum Requirements

Applicants must hold a completed three-year tertiary qualification — a National Diploma, Degree, or Diploma — in a relevant field such as Information Technology, Information Systems, Informatics, Computer Science, or Computer Systems Engineering. Strong programming fundamentals in Python, Java, and SQL are essential, as is a demonstrable interest in AI, machine learning, and large language models.

Candidates must be South African citizens (African, White, Coloured, or Indian), currently unemployed, under the age of 35 as of 1 April 2026, and residing in the greater Midrand area. Relocation will not be considered. Applicants must have no criminal record and must not be enrolled in any other learnership, internship, or academic programme at the time of application.

Additional advantageous skills include experience with version control tools such as Git or GitHub, familiarity with AI frameworks such as LangChain or TensorFlow, and a basic understanding of cloud computing.

How to Apply

Only applications submitted through the official Gijima recruitment portal will be considered. The closing date for applications is Friday, 20 March 2026. If you have not received a response by 30 April 2026, please consider your application unsuccessful.
