Umfolozi Sugar Mill (USM) is proud to announce its Apprenticeship Programme for aspiring artisans seeking to build a successful career in the sugar industry. Located in Mtubatuba, just 48km from Richards Bay, USM is nestled between the iSimangaliso Wetland Park and the Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Game Reserve, offering a unique and inspiring environment to launch your professional journey.

Established in 1913, Umfolozi Sugar Mill has grown to become one of South Africa’s leading producers of high-quality VHP brown sugar. We crush over 1.3 million tons of cane per season, producing approximately 135,000 tons of sugar and 40,000 tons of molasses. Our reputation is built on innovation, efficiency, and the development of talented individuals who are passionate about their trades.

Programme Overview

The USM Apprenticeship Programme is designed to nurture and develop future artisans by equipping them with technical expertise, hands-on experience, and the necessary workplace skills under the mentorship of seasoned professionals. Successful applicants will gain training in the following fields:

• Mechanical Fitting
• Welding
• Electrical Engineering
• Instrumentation

The apprenticeship is a structured three-year programme that includes both practical and theoretical training (Phase 1, 2, and 3) at Shukela Training Centre. Upon successful completion, apprentices will be eligible to qualify as artisans and may be offered employment opportunities with USM.

Minimum Requirements

To be considered for this exciting opportunity, applicants must meet the following criteria:

• Minimum Matric qualification with Mathematics and Science.
• N4 in the applicable trade field is essential; N6 or S4 is advantageous.
• Previous experience in a manufacturing or heavy industry environment is beneficial.
• Demonstrated interest and aptitude in the relevant trade.
• Ability to follow instructions, work under pressure, and commit to learning.
• Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
• Good record-keeping and punctuality.
• Computer literacy.

During the apprenticeship, successful candidates will:

• Work under the guidance of qualified mentors and senior artisans.
• Gain exposure to the practical aspects of the trade in a live industrial setting.
• Receive comprehensive training to develop competence in core artisan skills.
• Participate in assessments and evaluations to monitor progress and growth.
• Develop strong safety awareness, quality control, and maintenance capabilities.
• Be introduced to leadership development opportunities for future supervisory roles.
