The City of Cape Town, under its Corporate Services Department, is offering an exciting opportunity for unemployed South African graduates to join its Graduate Trainee Programme in Industrial Engineering. This is a three-year fixed-term contract funded by the National Treasury’s Infrastructure Skills Development Grant (ISDG), designed to equip young engineers with the practical experience and professional mentorship needed to achieve statutory registration.
About the Programme
This is not just a job — it is a structured engineering development journey. Successful candidates will be embedded within the City of Cape Town’s Human Resources and Corporate Services environment, working alongside seasoned professionals and mentors to complete a tailor-made training plan aligned with the requirements of the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA). The programme is designed to take you from graduate to professionally registered Engineer, Technologist, or Technician within three years.
What You’ll Be Doing
As a Graduate Trainee, you will produce a personalised training plan in collaboration with your assigned mentor, participate in capital and operational projects relevant to ECSA registration, and engage across multiple engineering disciplines through ISDG activities. You will be required to submit monthly and quarterly progress reports, perform routine activities in line with your training plan, and ultimately register professionally with ECSA as a Professional Engineer, Technologist, or Technician before the end of your contract period.
Who Should Apply
This opportunity is open to unemployed South African graduates under the age of 35 who hold one of the following qualifications in Industrial Engineering:
- Diploma / Advanced Diploma
- B Tech / B.Eng / BSc
- M Tech / M.Eng / MSc
- PhD
Applicants must be eligible to register with ECSA as a professional Engineer or Technologist. A Code B driver’s licence will be an added advantage.
