The Role

The Commis Chef will be responsible for the preparation and serving of quality food in accordance with departmental standards, working under supervision to maintain excellent hygiene and safety practices. This position offers hands-on experience in a professional kitchen environment and the opportunity to develop culinary skills alongside experienced chefs.

Key Responsibilities

Food Preparation & Kitchen Support

  • Assist the Chef de Partie with accurate measuring and preparation of meal ingredients
  • Season meats and prepare vegetables, fruits, herbs, and spices through washing, peeling, and chopping
  • Prepare basic salads and sauces as directed
  • Plate and present meals in line with established standards

Health & Safety Compliance

  • Conduct hazard analysis and implement critical control points
  • Practice “clean as you go” protocols and monitor temperature logs
  • Ensure regular sanitisation of work surfaces and kitchen equipment
  • Handle cleaning chemicals safely in accordance with safety guidelines

Inventory & Stock Management

  • Receive and inspect deliveries to verify quality and accuracy
  • Monitor inventory levels and report stock requirements to supervisors
  • Dispose of expired or spoiled items from storage areas

Administrative Support

  • Provide efficient support services through proactive planning
  • Align operational practices with OSHACT regulations
  • Maintain hygiene standards through routine cleaning and sanitisation

Ideal Candidate Profile

Essential Requirements:

  • Grade 12 / Matric Certificate
  • 1–2 years of experience in a kitchen or food preparation environment (hospitality or catering industry preferred)
  • Basic Food Safety and Hygiene Certificate (preferred)

Skills & Competencies:

  • Knowledge of food safety and hygiene practices
  • Ability to follow instructions and work effectively under supervision
  • Strong organisational and time management abilities
  • Excellent attention to detail and cleanliness
  • Physical stamina to stand for extended periods and perform manual tasks
