Launch Your Career in Sustainable Mining and Environmental Management

Digby Wells Environmental, one of Africa’s foremost environmental consulting firms, is offering an exceptional internship opportunity for a passionate and driven graduate to join its Mine Closure team in Sandton, Gauteng. If you are a young environmental or engineering professional eager to build a career at the intersection of mining, sustainability, and environmental stewardship, this is the opportunity you have been waiting for.

About Digby Wells Environmental

Digby Wells Environmental has built a reputation as a leading environmental consultancy across Africa, delivering integrated solutions that support responsible resource development. The firm works with major mining clients across the continent, providing expertise that spans environmental impact assessment, mine closure planning, rehabilitation, and regulatory compliance. Joining this team means working alongside some of the most experienced specialists in the industry on projects that genuinely matter for the future of sustainable mining in Africa.

The Role: Mine Closure Intern

As a Mine Closure Intern, you will be embedded within a team of closure specialists who provide strategic advice and technical support to mining clients at various stages of the mine life cycle — from planning and operation through to decommissioning and rehabilitation. This is a hands-on, substantive internship where your contributions will directly support real projects and real clients.

Your day-to-day responsibilities will include assisting in the development of mine closure strategies, plans, policies, and procedures; conducting gap analyses of clients’ existing closure frameworks; and preparing clear, well-structured reports on findings. You will support the team in advising clients on the practical implementation of closure plans, and you will contribute to the calculation of mine closure costs that meet South African regulatory requirements. You will also participate in audits and reviews of closure plans, assist with closure liability assessments, and help evaluate mine closure plans across the different stages of the mine life cycle.

Beyond technical work, you will contribute to project administration, ensuring that closure-related projects are delivered on time, within budget, and to the quality standards the firm is known for. You will also have the opportunity to support business development and marketing initiatives within the mine closure team, giving you valuable exposure to the commercial side of environmental consulting.

Who Should Apply

The ideal candidate holds a BSc in Engineering, Environmental Science, or a closely related field, and holds a valid driver’s licence. A postgraduate degree (MSc) in a relevant discipline will be an advantage, as will any certification or working knowledge of QGIS or other GIS platforms, or experience with Model Maker Systems.

In terms of personal attributes and skills, Digby Wells is looking for a candidate who is analytical, highly organised, and attentive to detail. You should be comfortable working independently as well as within a multidisciplinary team, and you must be an effective communicator — both in writing and verbally. Strong Microsoft Excel skills and solid numerical ability are essential. A willingness to travel internationally is also required.

Why Apply

This internship offers genuine, practical exposure to mine closure work at a firm that is at the forefront of environmental consulting in Africa. You will learn directly from experienced professionals, gain technical and commercial skills that are in high demand in the mining sector, and build a professional network that could define the trajectory of your career.
