Hatch is seeking a passionate and motivated Environmental Graduate / Junior Environmental Scientist to join its rapidly growing Environment and Sustainability Team. About the Role
This permanent position is based at Hatch’s regional office in Greenstone Hill, Johannesburg, with frequent travel to project sites in Mozambique. The role follows a 6 weeks on / 2 weeks off rotation, following an initial 2–3 month onboarding period at the Johannesburg office while permits and site arrangements are finalized.
As part of the Environmental Services Group (ESG), you will support onsite environmental monitoring and sampling programmes, contributing to projects that focus on climate change, environmental assessment and management, water resources, noise and vibration, and sustainable development.
Key Responsibilities
As a Junior Environmental Scientist, your responsibilities will include:
- Assisting with the compilation and implementation of environmental management and monitoring plans
- Supporting the planning and execution of environmental monitoring programmes
- Collecting environmental samples (water, air quality, terrestrial, aquatic, and noise) in line with standard protocols
- Recording, managing, and maintaining accurate field data and sample logs
- Conducting preliminary analysis of collected environmental samples
- Maintaining, calibrating, and troubleshooting monitoring equipment
- Assisting with data collation and preparation of detailed environmental reports
- Identifying onsite environmental risks and communicating them to the Environmental Team
- Participating in onsite coordination meetings, toolbox talks, and journey management planning
- Ensuring compliance with safety, health, environmental, and quality standards
- Collaborating with Africa, Europe, and Middle East Environment & Sustainability teams on international projects when required
Applicant Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Management, Biological Science, or a related field
- Honours or Master’s degree will be advantageous
- Strong attention to detail and excellent organizational skills
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment
- Good written and verbal communication skills
- Valid driver’s license
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and standard industry software tools
