Graduate Engineer – SCADA (Utility-Scale Solar PV Projects)

SOLA is offering a Graduate Engineer – SCADA internship in utility-scale solar PV projects. The role provides hands-on experience in SCADA design, commissioning, and support. Applicants need a BTech or BEng in Electrical, Electronic, Computer, or Mechatronic Engineering.

SOLA, a proudly South African renewable energy solutions provider, is seeking a motivated graduate engineer to join the organisation as a SCADA Intern. SOLA is a vertically integrated business specialising in the development, construction, and operation of solar PV and battery energy storage projects. With a focus on partnering with the private sector, the company delivers innovative clean energy solutions that enable businesses to thrive while achieving carbon reduction and sustainability goals. This opportunity offers a graduate the chance to gain valuable industry exposure while contributing to the company’s mission of powering positive energy across South Africa.

The primary purpose of this graduate position is to provide hands-on training and support in the design, commissioning, and operation of SCADA systems used in utility-scale solar PV projects. The successful candidate will collaborate with senior engineers to deliver robust, reliable, and well-documented SCADA and communication systems while building technical and project management skills. Based on-site in the Free State or North West, the intern will form part of a dynamic team dedicated to advancing the renewable energy sector.

The role carries a diverse set of responsibilities. On the technical front, the graduate engineer will support commissioning activities, assist in equipment testing, functional verification, and compliance checks. There will be opportunities to contribute to network design and documentation, signal mapping, and IP address configuration. The intern will also play a part in configuring SCADA-related devices, troubleshooting issues, and analysing performance data post-commissioning. From an administrative perspective, the intern will support the preparation of drawings, schematics, test procedures, and design reports, ensuring all documents meet the standards of accuracy and version control. Interpersonal aspects of the role include collaborating with project engineers and commissioning teams, liaising with vendors, and providing regular progress updates to senior team members.

Health and safety is a priority at SOLA, and the graduate engineer will be expected to comply with established safety, health, and environmental procedures. Adherence to safe working methods, particularly when dealing with live equipment or high-voltage systems, will be essential. The role is designed to provide measurable growth, with key performance indicators including maintaining SCADA system availability above 99 percent, demonstrating increasing proficiency in SCADA design and fieldwork, and building a strong foundation in PV plant operations.

To qualify for this opportunity, candidates must hold or be in the final stages of completing a BTech or BEng in Electrical, Electronic, Computer, or Mechatronic Engineering. Applicants should be willing to travel and spend time on project sites, show strong initiative, and demonstrate an eagerness to learn about SCADA systems, electrical infrastructure, and communication protocols. Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English are essential, and a passion for renewable energy will set successful candidates apart.

SOLA is committed to transformation and diversity, striving to build an inclusive workplace that reflects the demographics of South African society. Preference will be given to applicants from designated groups in line with the organisation’s Employment Equity plan. This role offers graduates the opportunity to contribute to South Africa’s clean energy future while gaining critical skills and professional development.
