Role Overview
ABB is currently seeking a skilled and motivated Field Service Technician to join our team in Modderfontein. This is a hands-on, customer-facing role responsible for servicing, repairing, and supporting ABB’s range of low and medium voltage drive units and electrical systems. You will be at the forefront of delivering high-quality, efficient field service to a range of industrial customers both locally and internationally.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct repairs and maintenance on standard drive units and subassemblies, ensuring a cost-effective and timely resolution to technical issues.
  • Deliver services in accordance with ABB’s standard processes and safety guidelines, ensuring all work is completed accurately and on time.
  • Maintain compliance with ABB and client Health, Safety & Environment (HSE) policies.
  • Perform diagnostics, troubleshooting, and repairs on equipment including:
    • Medium/Low Voltage (MV/LV) switchgear and distribution systems
    • Protection relays, relay coordination, and settings
    • Retrofitting MV/LV installations
  • Assist with energization and commissioning of electrical systems.
  • Accurately complete and submit service documentation, check sheets, and detailed site reports.
  • Proactively identify service improvement opportunities and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Use a variety of test equipment and tools to validate and verify system functionality.
  • Support junior technicians and customers with technical guidance and on-the-job training when required.
  • Travel as necessary within South Africa and across borders, including participation in standby schedules.

Required Qualifications and Experience

  • Diploma in Electrical Engineering (B Tech Electrical is advantageous)
  • Strong understanding of circuit diagrams, electrical schematics, and SABS installation standards
  • Hands-on experience in switchgear repair and testing
  • Proficient in using electrical test equipment
  • Valid Driver’s License and Passport
  • Willingness to travel and work in challenging environments
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines
