The Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) invites applications from motivated and qualified graduates for an exciting internship opportunity in the Landward Sciences impact area, within the Defence and Security Cluster. This internship aims to provide practical work experience and an opportunity to contribute to meaningful projects focused on mechanical systems design, testing, and research in national defence and security.

Internship Overview:
This internship is a hands-on learning opportunity for a recent Mechanical Engineering graduate to gain practical experience through involvement in research, prototyping, testing, and development of innovative technologies. Interns will work alongside experienced researchers and engineers in interdisciplinary teams, contributing to solutions that enhance vehicle mobility, blast protection, and soldier safety.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Participate in computational modelling and simulations using Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and multibody dynamics tools.
  • Assist with literature reviews, technical reporting, and research documentation.
  • Support the design, prototyping, and testing of mechanical systems for defence applications.
  • Help maintain and operate testing setups, including high-speed data acquisition systems and mechanical test rigs.
  • Contribute to field tests at the Detonics, Ballistics, and Explosives Laboratory (DBEL), focusing on blast effects and vehicle survivability.
  • Work with teams on rapid prototyping using advanced workshop tools and electronic control systems.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering.
  • Basic knowledge of mechanical system design, testing, and structural analysis.
  • Understanding of data acquisition systems and sensor technology.
  • Exposure to rapid prototyping tools and workshop machinery.
  • Awareness of lab safety practices and field testing protocols.
  • Interest or background in vehicle dynamics, blast modelling, or dynamic system analysis.

  • This is a temporary full-time internship based in Pretoria.
