Are you a South African student with a passion for engineering, planning, or environmental management? The Municipal Infrastructure Support Agent (MISA) is offering bursaries for the 2026 academic year, and this could be the opportunity that changes your life.
Who Is MISA?
MISA is a government component accountable to the Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta), established under Section 7(s)(c) Schedule 3 of the Public Service Act of 1994. Its core mission is to build the technical capacity of municipalities across South Africa, ensuring efficient infrastructure planning, delivery, operations, and maintenance. By investing in young talent today, MISA is building the pipeline of Built Environment professionals that local government desperately needs tomorrow.
Fields of Study Covered
MISA is inviting applications across five critical disciplines. Civil Engineering bursaries are available at universities and universities of technology, with 20 slots in total. Electrical Engineering offers 25 bursary opportunities, including five spots at TVET Colleges. Project and Construction Management has five available bursaries, while Urban and Regional Planning/Town and Regional Planning offers 15 opportunities. Environmental Management rounds off the list with five bursary slots available at universities.
Who Can Apply?
While the bursary is open to all qualifying South African students, MISA gives preference to candidates from rural areas and households with a combined annual income of below R600 000. MISA is an equal opportunity employer, and youth from previously disadvantaged backgrounds, as well as people living with disabilities, are strongly encouraged to apply.
