Mondi Richards Bay is recruiting Technician In Training candidates in Mechanical, Electrical, and Instrumentation Engineering. This 12-month programme covers P1 and P2 workplace experience in the Pulp and Paper industry. Applicants must have completed S4 studies with a 60% average and hold a valid driver’s licence.

Mondi, one of the world’s leading packaging and paper companies, is inviting applications for its Technician In Training Programme at its Richards Bay operations. Three disciplines are open for the 2026 intake: Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Instrumentation Engineering. This is a structured 12-month fixed-term programme designed to bridge the gap between academic study and professional practice in the Pulp and Paper industry.

About the Programme

The Technician In Training Programme is specifically designed for learners who have successfully completed their 24-month S4 academic programme at a university of technology recognised by Mondi South Africa. The 12-month programme is structured in two equal phases: the first six months cover P1 workplace experience, and the second six months cover P2, after which successful candidates may apply to their respective university of technology for their National Diploma.

Beyond the formal P1 and P2 requirements, trainees will benefit from structured on-the-job training and mentorship, exposure to real-world technical environments and industrial equipment, opportunities for professional growth and skills development, and a supportive, learning-focused team culture within Mondi’s world-class Richards Bay facility.

What You Will Do

As a Technician In Training, you will be embedded within Mondi’s Technical Department under the Corrugated Packaging Business Unit. Your responsibilities will include assisting with routine maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair activities; participating in technical projects and on-site support tasks; conducting inspections, testing, and data collection; maintaining accurate records and documentation; and engaging with maintenance teams on equipment performance issues. You will also be expected to navigate Mondi’s SAP and Microsoft-based training systems and ensure all activities are conducted in line with Mondi’s safety policies and procedures.

Minimum Requirements

To be considered, you must have successfully completed the S4 academic programme in Mechanical, Electrical, or Instrumentation Engineering at a recognised university of technology, completed your studies within 24 months, and achieved a minimum 60% average pass rate. A valid South African driver’s licence is also required.

What You Will Gain

By the end of the programme, you will have demonstrated competency in technical maintenance and problem-solving, the ability to independently conduct inspections, diagnostics, and corrective actions, and proficiency in technical reporting and compliance with safety standards. You will gain hands-on practical experience with plant equipment and operational processes, complete structured training modules and competency assessments, and build a solid foundation for transitioning into a fully-fledged Technician role. Exposure to continuous improvement initiatives and best practice methodologies will further strengthen your professional portfolio and position you well for future growth into specialist or supervisory roles.
