Position Overview

The National Department of Employment and Labour is seeking a qualified and dedicated OHS Inspector to join our team at the Mafikeng Labour Centre. Annual Salary: R397,116

Essential Qualifications and Requirements

Candidates must possess a three-year tertiary qualification at NQF Level 6 in one of the following fields: Environmental Health, Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronic Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Construction, Biology, Microbiology, Biomedical Sciences, Biotechnology, or Biochemistry. A valid driver’s licence is mandatory.

Required Knowledge and Expertise

The successful candidate must demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of departmental policies and procedures, the Occupational Health and Safety Act as amended, OHS Regulations, South African National Standards and incorporated Codes, the Compensation for Occupational Injuries and Diseases Act, and the Unemployment Insurance Act.

Key Skills

We are looking for someone with exceptional planning and organizing abilities, strong communication skills, and computer literacy. You should possess facilitation, interpersonal, conflict handling, and negotiation skills. Additionally, problem-solving, interviewing, presentation, innovation, and analytical capabilities are essential. Both verbal and written communication skills must be of a high standard.

Core Responsibilities

As an OHS Inspector, you will plan and independently conduct inspections to ensure compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act 85 of 1993, along with relevant regulations and incorporated standards. You will investigate and finalize incidents and complaints related to OHS legislation, enforce compliance measures, and appear in court as a state witness when necessary.

The role involves conducting proactive inspections according to scheduled plans, monitoring compliance with OHS and other labour legislation, and compiling comprehensive reports. You will independently plan and conduct advocacy campaigns on labour legislation, analyze their impact, and produce consolidated reports.

Contributing to regional inspection planning, drafting maintenance schedules, executing analysis, and compiling statistical reports on regional cases will form an integral part of your duties.
