Role Overview:
As a Production Engineering Intern at Unilever, you will have the opportunity to apply your academic knowledge in a practical, real-world setting. This internship will provide hands-on experience in manufacturing, engineering, and process improvement while contributing to the overall efficiency of our operations.

The position will be based at our Maydon Wharf site in Durban, where you will work closely with the engineering and production teams to drive operational excellence across the site. You will be involved in multiple projects focusing on process improvement, safety, quality, and cost management, and you will support the deployment of the Unilever Manufacturing System (UMS).

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Internship Requirements:
    • Complete all internship requirements as stipulated by Unilever, including training sessions, assessments, project completions, logbook entries, and presentations as required.
  2. Root Cause Analysis and Countermeasures:
    • Apply the full range of Unilever Manufacturing System (UMS) methods and tools to identify the root causes of issues and implement effective countermeasures.
    • Master tools and processes such as AM (Autonomous Maintenance), PM (Planned Maintenance), Q (Quality), and FI (Focused Improvement) to improve factory operations.
  3. Operational Efficiency and Process Improvement:
    • Support the optimization of factory lines and processes, ensuring efficient manpower ratios and effective resource utilization.
    • Collect and analyze complex data to uncover the root causes of operational problems, contributing to continuous improvement efforts.
    • Eliminate waste and loss in the production process using tools from the UMS framework.
  4. Digital Deployment in Manufacturing:
    • Lead the rollout of digital activities on the factory floor, including the implementation of standardized technologies to enhance operational consistency and efficiency.
    • Coordinate with different teams to ensure that digital tools are effectively deployed and used across the site.
  5. Project Management:
    • Lead and manage projects aimed at improving efficiency, safety, and cost management.
    • Work closely with various departments to ensure the successful implementation of improvement initiatives, and track progress against key performance indicators.
  6. Support UMS and R2S Programs:
    • Support the deployment of UMS (Unilever Manufacturing System) and R2S (Right First Time) programs at the site, ensuring adherence to operational excellence standards.
    • Assist with the rollout of improvement plans and conduct governance and gap analysis within the various UMS pillars.
  7. Health, Safety, and Quality Compliance:
    • Adhere to all site rules and SOP (Standard Operating Procedure) guidelines to ensure safety, quality, and compliance in daily operations.
    • Contribute to maintaining a safe working environment for all staff members by promoting safety awareness and following safety protocols.

Key Requirements:

  1. Educational Background:
    • A completed Degree in Mechanical, Chemical, or Industrial Engineering.
  2. Technical Skills:
    • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, and Word is essential.
    • Strong analytical skills with an affinity for data analysis and problem-solving.
  3. Communication Skills:
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with proficiency in English.
    • Ability to communicate effectively across different teams and levels of the organization.
  4. Self-Starter with an Agile Mindset:
    • Ability to work independently and take initiative in driving projects and tasks.
    • Demonstrate an agile mindset and adaptability in a fast-paced environment.
  5. Problem-Solving and Analytical Thinking:
    • Strong problem-solving skills, with a focus on identifying root causes and applying corrective actions.
    • Ability to handle complex data and use it to make informed decisions.
