The South African Reserve Bank is recruiting postgraduate Data Science graduates for its one-year Graduate Development Programme starting February 2027. About the South African Reserve Bank

The SARB is the central bank of South Africa, mandated by Section 224 of the Constitution to protect the value of the rand in the interest of balanced and sustainable economic growth. Its responsibilities span monetary policy, financial stability, prudential regulation, financial markets, financial surveillance, payments and settlements, statistics, research, and the production and distribution of banknotes and coin. As an institution at the heart of South Africa’s financial system, the SARB plays a critical role in shaping the country’s economic landscape.

About the Programme

Data science is an interdisciplinary field that harnesses scientific methods, algorithms, and systems to extract knowledge and actionable insights from both structured and unstructured data. The SARB’s Data Science Graduate Development Programme is designed to build deep capabilities in advanced analytics within a central banking context — equipping graduates with the skills and experience needed to drive data-led decision-making at the highest levels of South Africa’s financial system.

Successful candidates will be placed within Central Bank Departments at the SARB from February 2027 to January 2028. Throughout the programme, participants will attend structured learning interventions at the SARB Academy, including technical training modules. Graduates will also work periodically in a dedicated Data Lab environment, collaborating on real-world use cases that directly support the SARB’s core functions.

Minimum Qualifications

Applicants must hold a postgraduate qualification — or be in the process of completing one, having ideally completed their coursework — in one of the following fields:

  • Data Science
  • Machine Learning or Artificial Intelligence
  • Predictive Analytics Modelling
  • Statistics
  • Applied Mathematics
  • Digital Technology (Information Technology)
  • Fintech
  • Economics with Econometrics
  • Business Mathematics and Informatics

Additional Requirements

  • Proficiency in coding with R and/or Python
  • South African citizenship
  • A curious, innovative, and self-motivated disposition with strong analytical ability
  • An overall academic average of 70% or above
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Fintech experience will be advantageous
