This structured 12-month fixed-term programme is designed for learners who have successfully completed their S4 academic programme at a recognised university of technology and are ready to gain practical, hands-on experience in the global pulp and paper industry.

About the Programme

The Technician In Training Programme provides a structured pathway for engineering graduates to complete their P1 and P2 workplace experience requirements. The first six months are dedicated to P1, followed by six months of P2 — equipping successful candidates with the practical competencies needed to apply for their national diploma from their respective universities of technology.

Beyond the formal qualification requirements, trainees benefit from structured on-the-job training, dedicated mentorship from experienced technical professionals, exposure to real-world industrial equipment and processes, and a learning-focused team environment that supports professional growth at every stage.

Minimum Requirements

To be considered for this programme, applicants must meet the following criteria:

Successfully completed the S4 academic programme in Mechanical Engineering at a university of technology recognised by Mondi South Africa. Studies must have been completed within 24 months, with a minimum average pass rate of 60%. A valid South African driver’s licence is also required.

Key Responsibilities

Trainees will be actively involved in the day-to-day operations of Mondi’s technical environment. Responsibilities include assisting with routine maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair activities; participating in technical projects and on-site support tasks; conducting inspections, testing, and data collection; maintaining accurate records and technical documentation; and engaging with maintenance teams on equipment performance matters. Basic proficiency in SAP and Microsoft tools will be required to navigate internal training and reporting systems. All activities are carried out in strict accordance with Mondi’s safety policies and operational procedures.

Programme Outcomes

On successful completion of the programme, trainees will have demonstrated practical competency in mechanical maintenance and problem-solving; developed the ability to conduct independent inspections, diagnostics, and corrective actions; gained proficiency in technical reporting and equipment performance analysis; and built a strong foundation for transitioning into a fully-fledged Technician role. Trainees will also be exposed to continuous improvement initiatives and best practice methodologies, strengthening their technical portfolio and setting the stage for future growth into specialist or supervisory positions.
