Abantu Staffing Solutions is seeking a motivated and enthusiastic Trainee Technician to join an engineering services company based in Gqeberha, South Africa. This opportunity is ideal for recent graduates or final-year students in Electrical Engineering who want to gain practical experience in power systems, protection systems, and SCADA technologies.
The successful candidate will receive hands-on training and exposure to the testing, commissioning, and maintenance of electrical protection systems and SCADA communication networks used in substations and renewable energy facilities. You will work alongside experienced technicians and engineers, gaining valuable skills in electrical testing, troubleshooting, and system configuration.
This role offers a great opportunity to build a strong foundation in the power generation and electrical infrastructure sector, while working on real projects within substations and renewable energy environments.
Key Responsibilities
As a Trainee Technician, you will support senior technicians and engineers in various technical tasks, including:
- Assisting with the testing of primary plant equipment such as transformers, current transformers (CTs), voltage transformers (VTs), circuit breakers, and ring main units.
- Supporting the setup, testing, and configuration of protection relays (IEDs) and assisting with uploading protection settings.
- Performing functional testing of control plant equipment according to protection design and system requirements.
- Assisting with cable fault locating, electrical testing, and route identification.
- Supporting the configuration and setup of SCADA communication networks, including protocols and Remote Terminal Unit (RTU) systems.
- Assisting in compiling SCADA signal lists and performing system fault-finding.
- Working under supervision to develop skills in commissioning, testing, and troubleshooting electrical protection and SCADA systems.
- Participating in fieldwork at substations and renewable energy sites while following safety and operational procedures.
Minimum Requirements
To qualify for this opportunity, candidates should meet the following requirements:
- National Diploma in Electrical Engineering
- BTech Electrical Engineering (Heavy Current) or BEngTech in Electrical Engineering
- Final-year BEngTech Electrical Engineering students may also apply
- Valid driver’s licence
- Willingness to travel and work at project sites
