Position Overview

The Microbiologist Intern will be placed within the laboratory and quality assurance function of the business, where they will receive structured training and practical exposure to microbiological testing, sample management, and environmental monitoring. The internship runs for a minimum of six months, with the potential for permanent placement thereafter for candidates who demonstrate commitment and competence.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring the proper storage and handling of samples to maintain specimen integrity at all times. They will prepare culture media and reagents in strict accordance with standard operating procedures and will assist the Senior Microbiologist in carrying out routine microbiological testing across the facility. Accurate recording of test results and data capture will form a core part of the role, as will conducting environmental swabbing and hygiene monitoring in line with food safety requirements. Interns will be expected to follow all laboratory protocols and contribute to maintaining a clean, safe, and compliant working environment.

Minimum Requirements

To be considered for this internship, applicants must meet the following criteria:
A Grade 12 certificate is required, along with a relevant tertiary qualification — specifically a BSc in Microbiology or a National Diploma in Biotechnology. No prior work experience is required, as full training will be provided to the successful candidate. Applicants must be willing and available to work shifts, which may include weekends and public holidays when operational requirements demand it.

Internship Duration

The internship is structured for a minimum period of six months. Underberg Dairy has indicated that high-performing interns may be considered for permanent employment upon successful completion of the programme, making this a meaningful career entry point for graduates seeking long-term opportunities in the food science and dairy sector.
