The Department of Employment and Labour is seeking to appoint two Occupational Health and Safety Inspectors at the Bellville Labour Centre in the Western Cape. This position is ideal for individuals who are passionate about promoting workplace health and safety and enforcing compliance with South Africa’s occupational health and labour laws.
Minimum Requirements:
Applicants must possess a Senior Certificate along with a three-year tertiary qualification (National Diploma NQF6 or Bachelor’s Degree NQF7) in any of the following disciplines: Environmental Health, Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronic Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Biology, Microbiology, Biomedical Sciences, Biotechnology, Biochemistry, or Construction. A valid driver’s licence is mandatory. Candidates must have at least two years of functional experience in inspections and enforcement of labour legislation or a relevant environment.
Required Knowledge and Skills:
Candidates must have a sound knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act (as amended), relevant OHS regulations, South African National Standards, the Compensation for Occupational Injuries and Diseases Act, the Unemployment Insurance Act, the Employment Equity Act, and the Basic Conditions of Employment Act. Essential skills include planning and organizing, verbal and written communication, computer literacy, facilitation, interpersonal communication, conflict handling, negotiation, problem-solving, interviewing, presentation, innovation, and analytical thinking.
Key Responsibilities:
The successful candidate will be responsible for planning and independently conducting inspections to ensure compliance with the OHS Act, relevant regulations, and incorporated standards. Duties also include investigating and finalising incidents and complaints related to the OHS Act, appearing in court as a state witness when necessary, and conducting proactive inspections according to the allocated schedule. The inspector will also plan and conduct advocacy campaigns on labour legislation, analyse the impact, and compile reports. Additionally, they will contribute to the regional inspection planning, draft consolidated statistical reports, and provide expert-level support in technical inspection matters.
