The Department of Employment and Labour invites suitably qualified candidates to apply for the position of Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Inspector in Mechanical Engineering at the Stanger Labour Centre. This opportunity is ideal for a self-driven and professional individual who is passionate about promoting safe and healthy working environments in accordance with South African labour legislation.
Minimum Requirements:
- A Senior Certificate (Matric)
- A three-year recognised qualification at NQF Level 6 in Mechanical Engineering
- A valid driver’s licence
Knowledge:
- In-depth understanding of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, Regulations and South African National Standards
- Familiarity with the Compensation for Occupational Injuries and Diseases Act and the Unemployment Insurance Act
- Knowledge of departmental policies, procedures, and codes of practice
Skills:
- Excellent planning and organising skills
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Computer literacy
- Facilitation and presentation abilities
- Problem-solving, analytical thinking and innovation
- Conflict handling and negotiation skills
- Ability to work independently and handle investigations and inspections with confidence
Key Responsibilities:
- Plan and conduct independent inspections to ensure compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and related regulations
- Investigate incidents and complaints relating to the OHS Act, prepare reports and appear in court as a state witness when required
- Conduct proactive inspections as per schedule and compile relevant reports
- Promote awareness of labour legislation through advocacy campaigns and evaluate the impact of such initiatives
- Verify employer compliance with the Unemployment Insurance Act and the Compensation for Occupational Injuries and Diseases Act
- Contribute to the development and implementation of regional inspection plans and statistical reporting
