African Parks (AP) | Biodiversity & Science Support Unit | Remote/Field-Based
African Parks is one of the world’s leading conservation organisations, managing 22 national parks and protected areas across 12 countries in partnership with governments and local communities. Our Biodiversity and Science Support (BSS) unit is recruiting ten (10) Data Management & Analysis (DMA) Interns to support portfolio-level ecological data recovery and help embed standardised, repeatable data workflows across our park network.
About the Role
As a DMA Intern, you will play a hands-on role in tackling a critical backlog of ecological data — consolidating, cleaning, quality-assuring, and preparing datasets for analysis and reporting across African Parks’ diverse portfolio. You’ll work within a structured, collaborative team environment under the guidance of the Data Analysis & Intern Coordinator and Science Interface Manager, contributing directly to conservation outcomes at landscape scale.
Each intern will be assigned to one of ten thematic streams, including: Observations & Occurrence Records, Distance Sampling & Transect Monitoring, Aerial Survey Data, Camera Trap Data, Telemetry & Tracking Data, Fire Data & Derived Metrics, Vegetation & Invasive Species, Connectivity & Landscape Change, Translocations & Reintroductions, and Species of Special Concern.
What You’ll Do
- Identify, consolidate, and standardise existing ecological datasets across parks
- Support data intake and onboarding into AP monitoring systems
- Implement data quality assurance and control, including documentation and provenance records
- Prepare analysis-ready datasets and run automated summary tools using pre-defined R/Python scripts and Business Intelligence templates
What We’re Looking For
Required:
- Pursuing or completed a Bachelor’s Honours, Master’s, or equivalent in data science, computer science, statistics, ecological/environmental sciences, GIS, or related fields
- Practical skills in data cleaning, organisation, and quality control
- Proficiency in R and/or Python; basic SQL exposure is advantageous
- Strong attention to detail and clear written and verbal communication
- Genuine interest in applied conservation
Beneficial:
- Familiarity with ecological monitoring data types (camera traps, transects, telemetry, remote sensing, etc.)
- Experience with data standards such as Darwin Core/GBIF or FAIR/TRUST principles
- Experience producing data visualisations or dashboard outputs (e.g., PowerBI, RShiny, ArcGIS Online)
- French and/or Portuguese language skills and willingness to travel to remote locations
Don’t meet every requirement? We still encourage you to apply.
