In South Africa, EY’s Power & Utilities practice leads critical work in infrastructure modernisation, digital field operations, and operational resilience — and they are now seeking a motivated Junior Consulting Engineer to strengthen their Cape Town-based delivery team.

The Opportunity

This role offers a compelling entry point into professional consulting engineering for a recently graduated or early-career engineer. Embedded within EY’s Consulting – Power & Utilities division, you will work alongside seasoned professionals on large-scale utility deployment programmes that shape the reliability and performance of South Africa’s essential infrastructure. The position reports directly to a Senior Consulting Engineer or Quality Assurance Lead.

Your Responsibilities

You will take an active role in the technical quality and field coordination of utility installation and inspection programmes. Key responsibilities include:

  • Leading and coordinating teams of Quality Assurance Field Engineers in the field
  • Reviewing inspection outcomes and validating compliance with engineering and utility standards
  • Supporting operational planning, scheduling, and route allocation for field teams
  • Performing on-site verification and resolution of escalated technical issues
  • Analysing field data to detect trends, identify defects, and recommend improvements
  • Contributing to the development and refinement of quality frameworks and installation standards
  • Producing structured engineering reports and progress summaries for internal and client audiences
  • Upholding EY’s safety protocols and operational standards across all site activities

The role combines meaningful field exposure with office-based analytical responsibilities — ideal for engineers who are equally comfortable in both environments.

Who You Are

You are a detail-driven, analytically minded engineer with strong communication skills and a collaborative approach to work. You take direction well while showing initiative where it counts. You are eager to develop professionally within a structured consulting environment and are not deterred by travel, outdoor conditions, or the demands of field supervision.

What You Need

  • B.Eng in Civil, Industrial, or Mechanical Engineering, or an equivalent qualification
  • Valid South African Code B driver’s licence
  • Own reliable passenger vehicle
  • Proficient computer literacy across MS Office and digital or web-based tools
  • Willingness to travel to field sites and work in outdoor environments
  • 6–18 months of experience in engineering, utilities, or construction is advantageous
