Social Housing Regulatory Authority (SHRA) | Johannesburg | REF NO: COM/2026/2027
The Social Housing Regulatory Authority (SHRA) is a Schedule 3A public entity established under the Public Finance Management Act, No. 1 of 1999 (PFMA), and operates in terms of the Social Housing Act, No. 16 of 2008. SHRA’s core mandate is to regulate the social housing sector and facilitate access to quality, affordable rental housing for low to medium income earners across South Africa. As part of its continued commitment to developing the next generation of public sector professionals, SHRA is pleased to invite applications for its two-year Internship Programme.
Are you a young South African graduate ready to launch your career in compliance and regulatory work? This is your opportunity.
ABOUT THE PROGRAMME
SHRA’s Graduate Internship Programme is a structured, two-year workplace experience initiative targeting unemployed South African graduates below the age of 35. The programme is designed to bridge the gap between academic qualification and professional practice, drawing talent from universities and universities of technology across the country. Interns will work within a dynamic regulatory environment, gaining hands-on exposure to meaningful public sector functions that directly impact communities.
THE ROLE: COMPLIANCE OFFICER INTERN
Reporting to the Compliance Manager within the Compliance and Regulatory unit (CAR), the successful intern will be immersed in the full spectrum of compliance operations at SHRA. This is a rare opportunity to develop practical regulatory skills while contributing to the authority’s mission of promoting a well-governed social housing sector.
Key Learning Areas:
Over the duration of the internship, the incumbent will gain exposure to and develop competence in the following areas:
Compliance monitoring forms the backbone of this role. The intern will assist in tracking and evaluating the regulatory conduct of Social Housing Institutions (SHIs) against legislative and policy frameworks, learning how compliance is assessed and recorded in a regulatory environment.
Compliance information management and reporting will see the intern develop proficiency in gathering, organising and analysing compliance-related data, and translating this into clear, accurate reports for internal and external stakeholders.
Compliance support involves providing operational and administrative assistance to the compliance team, including helping to prepare documentation, correspondence and guidance materials used in regulatory engagements with sector stakeholders.
Enforcement exposes the intern to the processes followed when regulatory non-compliance is identified, including understanding the legal frameworks, escalation procedures, and corrective measures applicable within the social housing sector.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
To be considered for this internship, applicants must meet the following criteria:
Candidates must hold a Matric certificate and a three-year National Diploma or Bachelor’s Degree in Law, Business Management, or Auditing at NQF Level 7. Demonstrated computer literacy is required. A Certificate in Compliance Management will be regarded as an added advantage.
The ideal candidate is someone who pays meticulous attention to detail, communicates confidently and professionally, and is eager to apply their academic knowledge in a structured workplace setting. No prior work experience is required — SHRA is investing in your potential.
REMUNERATION & DURATION
Successful interns will receive a monthly stipend of R11 172.49 over a period of 24 months.
