The Department of Employment and Labour is inviting suitably qualified candidates to apply for two (2) OHS Inspector positions based in the Northern Cape — one at the Kimberley Labour Centre and one at the Kuruman Labour Centre. This is an excellent opportunity for professionals in engineering, health sciences, or related disciplines to serve the public by promoting and enforcing occupational health and safety standards across South African workplaces.
What You Will Be Doing
As an OHS Inspector, you will plan and independently conduct workplace inspections to ensure employer compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, Act 85 of 1993, as well as its associated Regulations and incorporated Standards. Your role will be hands-on and field-based, requiring initiative, sound judgement, and a working knowledge of labour legislation.
Your key responsibilities will include:
- Planning, investigating, and finalising incidents and complaints reported under the OHS Act, and enforcing compliance where necessary — including appearing in court as a State witness
- Conducting scheduled proactive inspections to monitor workplace compliance with the OHS Act and other relevant labour legislation, and compiling detailed inspection reports
- Planning and independently conducting advocacy campaigns on labour legislation, analysing their impact, and compiling consolidated reports
- Contributing to the planning, drafting, and maintenance of regional inspection plans, and preparing statistical reports on regional and allocated cases
Minimum Requirements
Applicants must hold a three-year tertiary qualification (NQF Level 6) in one of the following fields:
Environmental Health, Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronic Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Construction, Biology, Microbiology, Biomedical Sciences, Biotechnology, or Biochemistry.
A valid driver’s licence is essential.
Candidates must demonstrate sound knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, OHS Regulations, SANS Codes, the Compensation for Occupational Injuries and Diseases Act (COIDA), and the Unemployment Insurance Act. Strong planning, communication, analytical, negotiation, and problem-solving skills are required.
