Transnet Freight Rail is seeking a motivated and safety-conscious individual to join its operations team as a Trainee Train Assistant based in Postmasburg, Northern Cape. About the Role

As a Trainee Train Assistant, you will work alongside qualified Train Drivers to ensure the safe, efficient, and timely movement of freight across the rail network. You will be trained to handle a variety of locomotives and train consists, including airbrake, vacuum, high-speed, heavy haul, and passenger configurations. This role is both physically demanding and technically rewarding, offering structured on-the-job training leading to full certification as a Train Assistant.

Key Responsibilities

• Sign on duty, receive shift allocations, and prepare locomotives for departure
• Assist with locomotive start-up procedures, brake tests, and coupling operations
• Prepare and check communication equipment, including radios and telemeters
• Conduct pre-trip inspections to ensure roadworthiness and compliance with train working rules
• Execute shunting activities safely in sidings and en route
• Monitor signal positions, observe track conditions, and assist the Train Driver during normal and emergency operations
• Protect the train during incidents and provide accurate, timely feedback on any deviations
• Complete the Train Journal accurately after every shift and submit to the Section Manager

Minimum Requirements

• Grade 12 with pure Mathematics and/or Physical Science
• Minimum height of 1.6 metres
• Must be at least 21 years of age (in line with SANS 3000, par 6.2.6.8)
• Must be willing to undergo periodic medical surveillance and safety behavioural risk assessments during selection and every 12 months thereafter
• Physical, hearing, vision, and mental fitness (verified through medical tests)
• Must demonstrate psychomotor ability as assessed through the Vienna Testing System (VTS)
• Must be willing and able to work shifts
• Must be physically capable of carrying heavy objects

What You’ll Need to Succeed

Transnet is looking for candidates who are safety-conscious, punctual, results-oriented, and able to manage stress in a demanding operational environment. Strong observation skills, good judgement, and the ability to communicate clearly are essential. Knowledge of train working rules, locomotive classes, shunting procedures, and the Health and Safety Act 85 will be advantageous.
