The Department of Employment and Labour is inviting applications from suitably qualified and motivated individuals to fill the position of OHS Inspector based at the Makhanda Labour Centre.

ABOUT THE ROLE

This is an exciting opportunity for a driven professional to play a meaningful role in protecting the health, safety, and rights of workers across the Eastern Cape. The successful candidate will conduct independent inspections, investigate workplace incidents, and ensure full compliance with South Africa’s occupational health and safety legislation.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Applicants must be in possession of a Senior Certificate plus a recognised three-year qualification at NQF Level 6 or 7 (SAQA accredited) in one of the following fields:

  • Occupational Hygiene
  • Environmental Health
  • Analytical Chemistry
  • Chemical Engineering
  • Electrical or Mechanical Engineering

A valid driver’s licence is essential. Registration with a relevant recognised professional body will be an advantage, though it is not compulsory.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Plan and independently conduct workplace inspections to ensure compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act (Act 85 of 1993) and all related regulations and incorporated standards
  • Confirm employer registration with the Unemployment Insurance Act and the Compensation for Occupational Injuries and Diseases Act
  • Investigate and finalise workplace incidents and complaints independently, enforcing compliance where necessary, including appearing in court as a State witness
  • Execute proactive, scheduled inspections and compile comprehensive compliance reports
  • Plan and conduct advocacy campaigns on labour legislation, analyse their impact, and produce consolidated reports
  • Contribute to the development and maintenance of regional inspection plans, statistical reports, and compliance analysis

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS REQUIRED

Candidates must demonstrate knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, COIDA, the Unemployment Insurance Act, South African National Standards, and departmental policies and procedures. Strong planning, communication, facilitation, negotiation, conflict handling, and analytical skills are required. Computer literacy is essential.
