The City of Johannesburg (CoJ) invites applications from qualifying graduates for an exciting internship opportunity within its Community Development Department. This 18-month programme is designed to provide recent graduates with meaningful workplace exposure in governance, risk management, and compliance functions within a dynamic municipal environment.
This opportunity is open exclusively to residents of the City of Johannesburg who have not previously participated in an internship programme, or whose prior internship was unrelated to their field of study.

- Remuneration: R10 109.86 per month (basic salary, no benefits)

Minimum Requirements
Applicants must hold a Grade 12 (NQF Level 4) qualification plus a Diploma or Degree (NQF Level 6 or 7) in one of the following fields:
- Internal Audit / Auditing
- Risk Management
- Accounting / Financial Accounting
- Financial Management
- Public Administration / Public Management (with a demonstrated focus on governance, audit, or risk-related subjects)
Applicants must submit an academic transcript reflecting completed courses. Only candidates whose academic records demonstrate exposure to governance, risk management, audit, or compliance-related subjects will be considered. No previous work experience is required; however, prior learning through academic projects or case studies will be beneficial.
About the Role
The successful intern will provide administrative and analytical support to the Business Management Support Directorate. The programme is structured to expose the incumbent to municipal governance frameworks, risk management systems, audit coordination processes, and compliance reporting requirements in line with Batho Pele Principles and the City’s accountability standards.
Key Learning Areas include:
- Coordination of governance, risk, and compliance documentation
- Collation and verification of performance evidence
- General office and meeting support
- Governance, risk, and compliance communication and awareness activities
- Audit preparation and information management
Competencies Required
Candidates should demonstrate computer literacy across Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook, along with strong verbal and written communication skills. The role calls for accuracy, attention to detail, confidentiality, and the ability to work effectively within a team. A basic understanding of governance and compliance concepts within a public sector context is advantageous, as is familiarity with performance monitoring tools such as SDBIP.
