Hulamin is offering an entry-level Technician in Training (TIT) programme in Pietermaritzburg, designed to build technically competent, hands-on engineering technicians within Central Engineering. This is a practical, tools-based role for graduates ready to specialise in either Mechanical Engineering or Control & Instrumentation Engineering.
About the Programme
Successful candidates will work directly on specialised plant equipment, developing expertise in one of two streams:
Mechanical Engineering — levellers, slitters, mandrels, uncoilers, coilers and hydraulic systems.
Control & Instrumentation Engineering — specialised instrumentation, gauges and strip-centring equipment.
Trainees will diagnose, disassemble, repair and restore plant equipment while progressing into recognised technical specialists.
Key Responsibilities
Participate fully in the TIT development programme, completing all assessments, projects and training interventions.
Analyse equipment performance and trends to identify deteriorating conditions and emerging faults.
Conduct hands-on fault-finding, strip-down, inspection, repair, component replacement, testing and recommissioning of specialised plant equipment.
Develop specialist expertise within the Mechanical or Control & Instrumentation stream.
Support artisans and maintenance teams with technical troubleshooting and diagnostics.
Participate in planned and breakdown maintenance activities on assigned equipment.
Apply Root Cause Analysis (RCA) methodologies to investigate recurring failures and identify sustainable solutions.
Document repair activities, troubleshooting findings and improvement recommendations.
Contribute to equipment reliability, continuous improvement and preventative maintenance initiatives.
Maintain accurate technical records in line with the Quality Management System and OHS requirements.
Continuously build technical competence through mentoring, practical exposure and formal training.
Requirements
National Diploma, BTech or BEng Tech (NQF Level 7) in Mechanical Engineering or Electrical Engineering.
No prior work experience required beyond P1 and P2 practical training components.
Practical exposure to mechanical or electrical equipment through vacation work, in-service training or workshop projects is advantageous.
Exposure to specialised industrial equipment, hydraulic systems, instrumentation or rotating equipment is advantageous.
Demonstrated hands-on experience in fault finding, equipment repair, assembly or maintenance activities is advantageous.
Strong analytical, troubleshooting and problem-solving ability.
Ability to work methodically and systematically when diagnosing technical problems.
Strong learning orientation with a passion for developing specialist technical expertise.
Good communication and teamwork skills.
A valid South African Driver’s Licence (Code 08) is advantageous.
Willingness to work shifts, overtime and weekends as required.
Willingness to work in a manufacturing environment performing hands-on equipment maintenance.
