Overview

The South African Radio Astronomy Observatory (SARAO) is recruiting bright and enthusiastic Engineering and Science-Honours graduates for its Graduate-In-Training programme. This premier training initiative offers a unique opportunity to launch your career at the cutting edge of global radio astronomy.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for this prestigious programme, applicants must be South African citizens who have completed or are in their final year of studies in one of the following academic fields:

  • Software & Data: BSc / BSc Eng / B-Tech / Advanced Diploma in Software, Computer Science, or Data.
  • Mechanical & Mechatronic Engineering: B.Eng / BSc Eng in Mechanical or Mechatronic Engineering.
  • Electrical & Electronic Engineering: B.Eng / B-Tech Eng in Electrical or Electronic Engineering.
  • Civil Engineering: B.Eng in Civil Engineering.
  • Built Environment: Honours Degree in Quantity Surveying or Construction Management.
  • Cybersecurity & IT: Honours Degree in Cybersecurity, Information Security, Computer Science, Information Systems, or Computer Engineering.

Important Notes & Programme Structure

  • Duration & Placement: Successful graduates will be placed at SARAO Cape Town (Western Cape), Karoo Support Base, Klerefontein (Northern Cape), and Hartebeesthoek site (Gauteng) Offices for a period of 3 years, commencing on 1 March 2027.
  • Selection Process: Shortlisted candidates will be required to complete a mandatory online assessment as part of the selection process.
  • Academic Development: SARAO will offer financial assistance to successful graduates who register for a Master’s degree (part-time) at a South African university while participating in the graduate programme.
