Young Graduate – Engineering (ESA Technical Engineering Graduate)

ENGIE Southern Africa is recruiting a Young Graduate for its Renewable Generation Business Unit in Johannesburg. This two-year programme covers solar PV, wind, and BESS project modelling and optimisation. Engineering, energy, or data-related degree required. Closing date: 03 October 2026.


ENGIE Southern Africa is opening its doors to young graduates ready to build a career in renewable energy. Based in Johannesburg, this two-year Graduate Programme places you inside the Renewable Generation Business Unit, where you’ll support technical modelling, engineering analysis, and optimisation across solar PV, wind, and battery energy storage (BESS) projects.

This is a genuine end-to-end exposure role. You’ll work across the full project lifecycle — from origination and pre-development through to construction, operations, and asset management — collaborating with internal technical, grid, procurement, finance, and project teams, as well as external consultants, OEMs, and contractors.

What you’ll be doing

As a graduate on this programme, you will:

  • Support the screening of renewable and hybrid project opportunities, covering site, grid, resource, market, and commercial inputs
  • Assist with PV, wind, BESS, inverter, transformer, and hybrid configuration sizing during feasibility and tender stages
  • Prepare yield, dispatch, curtailment, LCOE, LCOS, capacity factor, degradation, and availability assessments
  • Build and maintain Excel- and Python-based models for hybrid sizing, BESS dispatch, and performance analysis
  • Contribute engineering inputs for layouts, single-line diagrams, and grid connection assumptions
  • Review consultant, OEM, EPC, and Owner’s Engineer inputs and summarise technical risks and recommendations
  • Support bid models, lender due diligence, and financial close readiness for PV+BESS projects
  • Assist with construction-stage design reviews, commissioning milestones, and performance testing
  • Support operations and asset management analysis, including generation, state of charge, curtailment, and model-versus-actual reviews
  • Prepare technical documentation and share knowledge within the Technical Oversight and Support team

You’ll also take part in local and international learning and training opportunities within the wider ENGIE Group.

Who they’re looking for

  • A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Energy Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, Data Science, Applied Mathematics, or a related technical field
  • A graduate or early-career candidate with a genuine interest in renewable energy, grid integration, and data analytics
  • Strong Excel skills; exposure to Python, MATLAB, Power BI, HOMER, PLEXOS, or PVsyst is an advantage
  • A basic understanding of PV generation, BESS dispatch, and performance metrics
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills
  • Willingness to commit to the full two-year programme and travel to project sites where required; a valid driver’s licence is advantageous

Candidates may be required to complete a case study, technical assessment, or modelling exercise as part of the selection process.
