The City of Johannesburg is offering internship opportunities to suitably qualified and unemployed graduates across multiple departments. Successful candidates will sign an internship agreement alongside an employment contract, committing to full participation in educational and workplace assignments in line with CoJ policies and procedures.

The following positions are currently open:

1. Internship: Executive Director’s Office

Department: Human Settlements | Ref: 013/2026

Requirements: Degree in Business Management / Business Administration / Public Management / Public Administration

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform developmental-level professional administrative work, research, and analysis in support of the Business Management Directorate
  • Participate in day-to-day operations including general office administration, monitoring and evaluation, risk management, and regulatory compliance
  • Contribute to the development of Business Plans, Quarterly Reports, and strategic planning concept notes
  • Assist with site visits and physical risk assessments to verify reported project information
  • Handle and transport restricted, sensitive, and confidential documents

Skills Required: MS Office proficiency (including Excel data analysis), research and analytical skills, strong written and verbal communication, planning and organisational skills, ability to handle confidential information, and strong attention to detail.

2. Internship: IPPR Monitoring and Reporting

Department: Community Development | Ref: 012/2026 | Closing Date: 15 June 2026

Requirements: Diploma or Degree in Public Management / Developmental Studies / Political Studies / Political Science

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct research and analyse data to support the directorate in understanding and responding to community needs
  • Provide research and policy support to inform effective decision-making
  • Assist with performance reporting and monitoring
  • Support stakeholder management activities
  • Handle record, document, and information management as well as assets and resource management

Skills Required: Computer literacy (MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook), research and analytical skills, report writing, verbal and written communication, organisational and time management abilities, and adherence to Batho Pele principles.

3. Internship: Capital Projects & Repairs

Department: Social Development | Ref: 011/2026 | Closing Date: 15 June 2026

Requirements: Degree in Quantity Surveying / Civil Engineering / Electrical Engineering / Mechanical Engineering / Building / Project Management / Administration / Management. An understanding of Local Government policies and procedures will be an added advantage.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Implement project plans in line with approved business cases and manage project implementation within specified timeframes and budgets
  • Ensure appropriate business plans and procedures are developed, communicated to relevant stakeholders, and implemented
  • Support the strategic imperatives of the Facilities Management Unit
  • Maintain professionalism and work ethics in the execution of all responsibilities

Skills Required: Knowledge of CoJ policies and prescripts, laws and acts governing the municipality, customer and service delivery management (Batho Pele), and a high standard of integrity and professionalism.

4. Internship: Paralegal

Department: Group Legal and Contracts | Ref: 010/2026 | Closing Date: 08 June 2026

Requirements: National Diploma in Law / Legal Assistance / Paralegal or related field

Key Responsibilities:

  • Render comprehensive legal assistance to the Group Legal and Contracts Department, including preparation and filing of documents, report writing, and legal research
  • Evaluate and assess legal matters instituted against the City to minimise legal claims and protect Council interests
  • Manage the litigation management unit by executing instructions and coordinating the litigation office
  • Interact with directors, deputy directors, legal advisors, legal practitioners, and external service providers regarding document processing
  • Arrange and attend meetings for the litigation management unit, including BSCs and BECs

Skills Required: MS Office proficiency, strong verbal and written communication, people skills, coordination skills, and knowledge of litigation management, court proceedings, processes, and procedures.
