The Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), in partnership with the Sasol Foundation, is offering bursaries to support the development of qualified scientists, engineers and technologists across South Africa. This undergraduate bursary programme is designed to build a strong pipeline of SET skills that will sustain the country’s workforce and drive innovation well into the future.

About the Programme

The CSIR-Sasol Foundation Bursary Scheme provides comprehensive financial and non-financial support to eligible South African students registered or intending to register for undergraduate studies at a public university. The programme goes beyond funding — it invests in the holistic development of each student, ensuring they are equipped not only academically but personally and professionally.

Who Can Apply

To be eligible for this bursary, applicants must meet the following criteria:

• Must be an unemployed South African citizen
• Registered or intending to register at a South African public university for an undergraduate qualification
• Grade 12 applicants must have achieved Level 6 in Mathematics and Physics and Level 5 in English
• University students must maintain a minimum average of 65% and must never have failed a module
• Preference will be given to applicants from previously disadvantaged backgrounds and NSFAS holders

What the Bursary Covers

Successful applicants will receive a comprehensive financial support package, which includes:

• Registration and tuition fees
• Accommodation and meals
• Monthly living allowances
• Book allowance
• Once-off laptop allowance

For students residing in university residences, fees will be paid directly to the institution. Students in private accommodation will receive payments into their personal bank accounts.

Non-Financial Support

In addition to financial assistance, bursary recipients will have access to a range of non-financial benefits, including:

• Psychosocial support
• Mentorship programme
• Onboarding programme
• Personal and academic skills training

Responsibilities of Bursary Recipients

Bursary holders are expected to meet certain obligations to retain their funding and remain in good standing with the programme:

• Submit academic results at the end of each semester
• Upon graduation, offer their services at the CSIR for a period equal to the number of years they were funded
• Participate in vacation work during university holidays, gaining hands-on exposure to CSIR projects for up to six weeks per year, subject to supervisor availability

Applicants must complete the online application form in full. Incomplete applications will not be considered. The following supporting documents must accompany the application:

• Proof of South African identity document
• Grade 11 report or Matric certificate
• Academic record (if applicable)
• Updated CV

Once submitted, applicants can track their application status using the login credentials provided during the application process. All applicants will be notified of their outcome, and shortlisted candidates will be invited to attend a virtual interview session.
