Applications are open for the 2027 intake into the Diploma in Nursing programme at the Gauteng College of Nursing. Training is offered across four campuses: Ann Latsky, Chris Hani Baragwanath, SG Lourens, and Bonalesedi.

Who Can Apply

Applicants must be South African citizens residing in Gauteng Province. You must hold one of the following school-leaving qualifications: a Senior Certificate, a National Senior Certificate, be currently enrolled in Grade 12, or hold a National Vocational Certificate in Primary Health Care.

Subject Requirements

• Senior Certificate: English HG D or SG C, Biology HG D or SG C, Mathematics HG D or SG C, with an M score of 17
• National Senior Certificate: English Level 4, Life Sciences Level 4, Mathematics Level 4 (or Maths Literacy Level 5), and an APS of 27 or higher (Life Orientation counts half)
• National Vocational Certificate: 50% in Fundamental Subjects (English First Additional Language, Maths/Maths Literacy, Life Orientation) and 60% in Vocational Subjects (SA Health Care System, Public Health, The Human Body and Mind, and Community Oriented Primary Care)
• Current Grade 12 learners must meet the National Senior Certificate requirements based on their Grade 11 final results

Competencies and Attributes

Successful candidates should demonstrate a passion for nursing, strong problem-solving ability, patience, and the ability to relate well to people. Organisational and leadership ability, flexibility, and calmness during a crisis are essential, along with solid communication, numeracy, and life skills. Computer literacy, study skills, honesty, and a compassionate, caring nature are also required.

Application Process

All applications must be submitted online through the GPG Professional Job Centre system. No hand-delivered or emailed applications will be accepted. You are required to register a profile on the system before applying, and supporting documents must be scanned and uploaded, including your Senior/National Senior/National Certificate (Vocational) or a statement of Grade 12 results (or final Grade 11 results for current learners).

Applications close on 26 September — no late applications will be considered.

Selection Process

Shortlisted applicants will undergo a compulsory psychometric assessment. Those successful at this stage will proceed to medical surveillance, including a physical examination and full document verification. Note that completing all stages of the recruitment process does not guarantee final selection onto the programme.

Programme Commitments

Successful applicants will be required to sign an agreement with the Gauteng Department of Health and attend lectures. The programme includes Work Integrated Learning (WIL), which involves shifts and working on public holidays, weekends, and nights at Gauteng Department of Health hospitals and clinics.
