Hulamin is looking for driven, technically minded graduates to join our Technician in Training programme — an entry-level development opportunity built to grow technically competent, hands-on engineering technicians capable of independently diagnosing, disassembling, repairing and restoring specialised plant equipment.

Successful candidates will develop specialist expertise in one of two technical streams:

Mechanical Engineering – levellers, slitters, mandrels, uncoilers, coilers and hydraulic systems.

Control & Instrumentation Engineering – specialised instrumentation, gauges and strip-centring equipment.

This is a practical, tools-based role. You’ll work directly on equipment, analyse performance trends, identify faults and carry out repairs while developing into a recognised technical specialist within Central Engineering.

Key Responsibilities

• Participate fully in the TIT development programme, completing all required assessments, projects and training interventions
• Analyse equipment performance and trends to identify deteriorating conditions and emerging faults
• Conduct hands-on fault-finding, strip-down, inspection, repair, component replacement, testing and recommissioning of specialised plant equipment
• Develop specialist expertise within either the Mechanical or Control & Instrumentation equipment stream
• Support artisans and maintenance teams with technical troubleshooting and diagnostic assistance
• Participate in planned and breakdown maintenance activities on assigned equipment
• Apply Root Cause Analysis (RCA) methodologies to investigate recurring equipment failures and identify sustainable solutions
• Document repair activities, troubleshooting findings and improvement recommendations
• Contribute to equipment reliability, continuous improvement and preventative maintenance initiatives
• Maintain accurate technical records in compliance with the Quality Management System and OHS requirements
• Continuously develop technical competence through structured mentoring, practical exposure and formal training

Requirements

• National Diploma, BTech or BEng Tech (NQF Level 7) in Mechanical Engineering or Electrical Engineering
• No prior work experience required beyond P1 and P2 practical training components
• Practical exposure to mechanical or electrical equipment through vacation work, in-service training, workshop projects or similar activities is advantageous
• Exposure to specialised industrial equipment, hydraulic systems, instrumentation or rotating equipment is advantageous
• Demonstrated hands-on experience in fault finding, equipment repair, assembly or maintenance activities is advantageous
• Strong analytical, troubleshooting and problem-solving ability
• Ability to work methodically and systematically when diagnosing technical problems
• Strong learning orientation with a passion for developing specialist technical expertise
• Good communication and teamwork skills
• A valid South African Driver’s Licence (Code 08) is advantageous
• Willingness to work shifts, overtime and weekends as operational demands require
• Willingness to work in a manufacturing environment and perform hands-on equipment maintenance activities
