๐ŸŒ Amazon Web Services (AWS) โ€” Data Center Engineering Operations Internship | South Africa

Amazon Web Services (AWS) is hiring Data Center Engineering Operations Interns in Cape Town for a 6-month programme starting March 2026. Open to Mechanical, Electrical, and Electronic Engineering graduates.

Location: Cape Town, South Africa
Duration: 6 Months | Full-Time (40 hours/week)
Start Date: March 2026
Employer: Amazon Data Services South Africa (Pty) Ltd

Amazon Web Services (AWS) is the world’s most comprehensive and broadly adopted cloud platform โ€” and the people who keep it running are the Data Center Engineering Operations (DCEO) team. If you are a young, driven engineering graduate ready to work at the heart of one of the world’s most advanced infrastructure environments, this six-month internship is your opportunity to build something that matters.

About the Role

As a Data Center Engineering Operations Intern at AWS, you will be embedded within a live Amazon data center in Cape Town, contributing to the physical critical facility infrastructure that powers cloud services used by millions of customers globally. This is a hands-on, technical role โ€” not a desk-based programme. You will work alongside experienced engineers, interact with third-party vendors and contractors, and be directly involved in the daily operations that keep AWS infrastructure running safely and reliably.

From day one, you will take ownership of real responsibilities. Interns are expected to take daily operational readings of mechanical and electrical equipment, assist with corrective and preventative maintenance, support root cause analysis of equipment failures, and help troubleshoot facility and rack-level events within internal service level agreements. You will also utilise the internal Computerised Maintenance Management System (CMMS) to manage building workflows and contribute to vendor management and metrics reporting.

The DCEO team operates around the principle of maintaining the highest standards of safety, security, availability, productivity, capacity, efficiency and cost โ€” and as an intern, you will be part of upholding those standards.

Who Should Apply

This internship is designed for candidates who:

  • Hold a Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Mechanical, Electrical, or Electronic Engineering, or a related field โ€” or have completed a minimum NQF Level 4โ€“6 qualification from an accredited institution
  • Are unemployed prior to joining the programme
  • Are under 35 years of age at the time of application
  • Are South African citizens
  • Are able to provide a valid internship agreement from their university
  • Are fluent in English and able to work effectively in a team environment

In line with applicable legislation, preference will be given to eligible applicants from designated groups including Black candidates (Africans, Coloureds, Indians and Chinese), women, and persons with disabilities who are South African citizens.

Why AWS

AWS pioneered cloud computing and has never stopped innovating. As an intern, you will join a globally diverse team that values curiosity, ownership and continuous learning. AWS offers mentorship, knowledge-sharing, and a working culture that respects work-life balance. The DCEO team is a launchpad for a serious career in critical infrastructure and engineering operations.

Intern schedules run Monday to Friday on day shifts. Note that Amazon does not sponsor immigration for this role, and applicants must be legally authorised to work in South Africa.
