About the Programme

The full three-year training programme is accredited with the Southern African Institute of Welding (SAIW) and demands a genuine commitment to academic excellence. Trainees are developed toward three distinct roles:

The IPE (Inspector of Pressurized Equipment) oversees and certifies repairs and new equipment manufacturing at Sasol Secunda, covering welding inspection, material certification, and compliance with manufacturing or repair codes. The CP (Competent Person Inspector) is responsible for the physical inspection and certification of in-service equipment, ensuring safe continued operation through visual inspection, non-destructive testing (NDT), and Risk Based Inspection (RBI) assessments. The AIA Inspector handles certification of manufactured products to governing codes and performs physical inspections on pressure vessels and steam generators for continued operational suitability.

What You Will Learn and Do

As a trainee, you will be guided through a comprehensive curriculum covering all aspects of pressurized equipment and piping inspection, including:

  • Performing and evaluating visual inspections and wall thickness measurements
  • Magnetic particle testing and dye penetrant testing
  • In-service inspections on pressure vessels, steam generators, and piping in accordance with PER requirements
  • Reviewing and interpreting radiographs and observing pressure tests
  • Supporting fitness-for-service calculations and detailed inspection activities
  • Documenting inspection findings and compiling individual technical reports
  • Supporting the management of inspection delays and frequency changes to assess integrity risks
  • Learning high-technology NDT techniques including UT, TOFD, PAUT, IRIS, Eddy Current, GUL, and conventional and computed X-rays
  • Supporting the calibration and certification of safety devices for PER compliance
  • Contributing to the control of non-conforming products

Minimum Requirements

  • Completed Grade 12 with a minimum 50% pass in Pure Mathematics, Physical Science, and English
  • A completed S4 qualification in Mechanical, Metallurgy, or Welding Engineering will be favourably considered
  • A valid driver’s licence is advantageous
