The City of Cape Town’s Human Resources Department, under the Corporate Services Directorate, invites suitably qualified candidates to apply for its Graduate Internship Programme (GIP) and Infrastructure Skills Development Grant (ISDG) programmes. These programmes aim to provide graduates with practical, hands-on experience, supporting skills development and career growth within municipal services.

The Graduate Internship Programme is offered as a fixed-term contract to recent graduates who have successfully completed a three-year Diploma or National Diploma at a registered university or university of technology, or an accredited institution of higher learning. The programme is designed to transfer knowledge and practical skills to participants and can be structured either as full-time or part-time. Eligible fields for this programme include Graphic Design, Data Science, Digital Marketing, Computer Science/Engineering, Sport Science, and Industrial Engineering.

The Infrastructure Skills Development Grant offers a three-year contract to graduates seeking practical exposure and professional development in specialized technical fields. Available positions include Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and Urban Planning. Candidates applying for the GIS-focused internship must hold a diploma or degree in Geographical Information Systems, Geomatics, Geo-informatics, Geospatial Science, or Data Science/Data Informatics, ideally with experience or interest in urban planning and land use management. Applicants must be preparing to register with the South African Geomatics Council (SAGC) in the GIS branch, in any category, whether as a Technician, Technologist, or Professional. Full-time commitment during office hours is required, and candidates should demonstrate proficiency in GIS software and Microsoft Office. Python programming skills are considered an advantage.

For Urban Planning internships, applicants must be unemployed South African graduates under the age of 35, residing in Cape Town, with a qualification accredited by the South African Council for Planners (SACPLAN) in Town/City and Regional Planning. These positions provide graduates with the opportunity to gain practical experience and contribute meaningfully to urban development initiatives within the City.

All applicants must be South African citizens, unemployed, and below the age of 35. Preference will be given to candidates who reside in the Cape Town metropolitan area and demonstrate a strong commitment to professional development and public service.

Interested candidates are encouraged to submit their applications with relevant qualifications and supporting documents. The closing date for applications is 2 September 2025, and applicants must quote the reference number CS 121/25 Ext in all correspondence.

These internships represent a unique opportunity for graduates to apply their academic knowledge in real-world municipal projects while gaining invaluable experience that supports career progression. The City of Cape Town is committed to nurturing talent and fostering an inclusive, skills-focused environment that empowers the next generation of professionals.

For further details and to apply, candidates are encouraged to visit the City of Cape Town’s careers portal or contact the Human Resources Department directly. These programmes offer a structured pathway into professional practice and aim to strengthen the skills base within the municipal sector.
