Rheinmetall Denel Munition (RDM) is offering an exciting internship opportunity that will provide you with hands-on experience in managing projects within one of South Africa’s leading defense and munitions companies.

About the Role

As a Project Management Intern, you’ll be an integral part of our Product Development Projects team, gaining practical exposure to real-world project coordination, portfolio management, and continuous improvement initiatives. This full-time internship is designed to develop your skills while contributing meaningfully to our operations.

You’ll work directly with experienced project managers, learning industry best practices while applying your academic knowledge to tangible business challenges. This role offers a unique opportunity to understand the complexities of managing projects in a highly regulated manufacturing environment, where precision, compliance, and quality are paramount.

Your Key Responsibilities

Your daily activities will encompass a diverse range of project support functions. You’ll maintain critical project registers, tracking actions, risks, lessons learned, and key decisions. Meeting coordination will be a core part of your role—scheduling sessions, capturing detailed minutes, and ensuring action items are followed through to completion.

Documentation is essential in our industry, and you’ll be responsible for preparing and updating project portfolio materials, reports, and presentations for various stakeholders. You’ll help maintain our project portfolio database, ensuring accuracy and accessibility of vital project information.

Compliance tracking will expose you to quality management systems and regulatory requirements. You’ll identify gaps in documentation and work with the team to address them promptly. Budget monitoring and data processing will develop your analytical skills as you support monthly financial tracking and reporting activities.

You’ll also have the opportunity to lead small internal improvement initiatives, coordinating short sprints and mini-projects focused on process optimization and reporting enhancements. This hands-on project planning experience will allow you to apply fundamental project management principles in scope, time, and cost management while reporting outcomes directly to the Product Development Projects Manager.

What You’ll Need

We’re looking for candidates with a National Diploma in Industrial or Systems Engineering (NQF 6) or an equivalent technical qualification. Alternatively, an NQF 6 qualification in Project Management will be considered.

Technical proficiency is essential—you must be comfortable with Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook). Familiarity with MS Project is advantageous and will enhance your contribution to the team.

Beyond technical skills, we value strong organizational abilities, excellent planning capabilities, and clear communication. Your analytical mindset and attention to detail will be crucial for managing and processing data accurately. We need someone who can work independently, prioritize competing tasks, and demonstrate initiative when facing challenges.

Professionalism and integrity are non-negotiable. You’ll be expected to adhere to office protocols, maintain confidentiality, and uphold RDM’s policies and procedures, including compliance with ISO Standards related to Safety, Health, Environment, Quality, and Energy management.

A valid driver’s license is advantageous, as occasional travel within the region may be required.

Why Join RDM?

This internship offers more than just work experience—it’s a gateway to understanding project management in a sophisticated manufacturing environment. You’ll gain exposure to international standards, work with cutting-edge defense technology, and develop skills that are highly transferable across industries.

RDM is part of the global Rheinmetall Group, offering stability, professional development opportunities, and the chance to work on projects that matter.
