About the Role
The Electrical Technician in Training (Generators) is a hands-on developmental position within Eskom’s Generator Services department. The successful candidates will be immersed in the specialised world of large-scale generator maintenance and testing, focusing specifically on:
- Inspecting, testing, commissioning, and maintaining the electrical integrity of generator rotors and stators
- Establishing and qualifying winding conditions and insulation health
- Assessing electrical balance across generator systems
- Detecting and reporting general electrical faults
This is a rare opportunity to gain exposure to high-voltage, high-stakes engineering work within one of Africa’s most critical infrastructure environments. Trainees will work under the guidance of experienced engineers and technicians, building both theoretical understanding and practical competence over time.
What Eskom Is Looking For
Minimum Qualification:
Applicants must hold a National Diploma in Electrical Engineering (Heavy Current).
Experience:
While this is an entry-level training position, Eskom values candidates who have had some form of hands-on electrical exposure. This may include apprenticeship or learnership participation, TVET college practical training, workshop-based electrical work, or experience assisting qualified electricians or technicians.
Technical Knowledge Required:
- Understanding of electrical systems, components, and tools
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints and electrical schematics
- Familiarity with safety standards and electrical codes, including the National Electrical Code
- Understanding of basic electrical theory
- Physical ability to work in varied environments including heights, confined spaces, and industrial settings
Key Skills:
- Basic use of electrical tools including multimeters and insulation testers (with supervision)
- Proficiency with basic electrical testing equipment
- Ability to understand cause-and-effect relationships in electrical systems
- Good communication and teamwork abilities
Personal Attributes:
- Quick learner who absorbs procedures, drawings, and checklists readily
- Genuinely curious, with a willingness to ask the right questions
- Strong safety awareness and hazard recognition
- Committed to following procedures exactly — no shortcuts
